About the Project

TUMU Property partnered with TimberSpan to construct BBI Wood Products a new sustainable, low impact training facility for Building Futures, located in Irongate, Hastings.

Building Futures provides training opportunities for rangitahi, with an eight-week hands-on course designed to pave the way for a career in the timber processing, building supplies, and construction industries. The space operated by Building Futures boasts a versatile kitchen, office space, and a sprawling 700 sqm practical workspace, all aimed at empowering the next generation.

The building, comprising of 1,450 sqm clear span warehouse is surrounded by cantilevered canopies. Along with Building Futures, the building is also home to the Hawke’s Bay Jobs and Skills Hub, administered by the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) and Good Wood Products. MSD’s area includes a 230 sqm architecturally designed office.

BBI was also able to showcase a range of their products. The office interior is lined with BBI’s Blondeline Birch Plywood with a negative detail. The exterior cladding and feature walls consist of Textured PlyClad board and batten, and extensive Kwila decking and Kwila slat shade screens finish the exterior with a contemporary design.

The project included the construction of a 4,000 sqm concrete yard and car park.

Other sustainable, low impact design strategies included low-carbon concrete, a comprehensive solar and battery system, allowing part of the building to operate ‘off-grid’ and a vegetated swale to treat and dispose of onsite stormwater.
